Types of Prams

Single Pram

A single pram is designed to transport a child from birth usually up to approximately 4 years of age. They come in a range of styles and types from a basic lightweight pram to prams with changeable seats to accommodate a bassinet or car seat.

Double/Twin Pram

A double/twin pram is designed to accommodate two children. Double prams come either as a side by side pram or tandem pram (one seat behind the other) with both being able to accommodate children of different ages. The top pram brands for double strollers have the ability to recline each seat independently, so an older child doesn’t necessarily have to lie flat whilst a younger child sleeps or vice versa.

Whilst a double pram is fantastic for families with more than one small child; they can be difficult to push around corners, get through narrow spaces and tend to be heavy and bulky to store in your car.

Jogger

best pram 2

Jogger prams are designed for active families and in particular for parents that want to go jogging whilst they push their children in the prams. The best running pram Australia 2023 has are easy to move due to their high quality large swivel wheels and have built in suspension to absorb the shocks and bounces that come with pushing a pram at reasonably high speeds.

They usually have all terrain and bigger wheels, so the best all terrain pram Australia has is ideal if you often take your pram off road or on non-pavement type surfaces.

The top rated prams for jogging tend to be expensive and also can be more difficult to push around a shopping centre and easily fold down to store in your car. These types of prams really are just for jogging parents or ones that live somewhere where they often need to push their pram on gravel/dirt/stones/etc.

Travel System

A travel system combines a pram with a detachable car seat and is fantastic for parents of newborn babies as it makes transitioning them from the car to the pram super quick and easy. A travel system means you can simply take the car seat from the car and slot it into the pram. With the best travel system pram Australia has, there is no need to remove baby from their car seat and then secure them in the pram.

Some pram brands Australia has, use a combined travel system, but more often than not, you are required to purchase the adapters and car seat separate to the pram and this can work out reasonably expensive. The good news is that many different prams work with different car seats even if they are from different brands.

Umbrella

An umbrella stroller is a lightweight, small pram with small wheels and limited features. The advantage of an umbrella stroller is they are small and fold compactly making them easy to get in and out of the car. These strollers are often the best cheap prams and great for family holidays.

Choosing The Best Pram Australia 2023

The best baby prams Australia 2023 has, come in many shapes and sizes and with a range of features. Before deciding which pram to buy, consider the following features to ensure you purchase the perfect pram to meet your individual needs.

Size

Carting around small children and all the things they need takes up a lot of space and a stroller is going to eat into this space even further. Before purchasing a stroller, consider the size of your car boot and ensure you have the ability to adequately accommodate it plus anything else you need to store in there.

best pram

It is recommended that you purchase a pram that is just the right size, no need to find the biggest pram, you will only regret it later. Just buy a pram that comfortably fits your child as well as allowing some room for your child to grow.

Weight

While the majority of the time you will be pushing the stroller along, you will find that you will need to carry it from time to time. Plus even when you are pushing it, add a heavy baby (or maybe two if its a double stroller) and you will soon find yourself pushing a rather heavy load.

A lightweight pram is highly recommended, but of course quality should not suffer. Note that the more features added, the more it is going to weigh.

Age & Weight Of Child

Single strollers are designed to suit a range of children of different weights and ages, so you must check that the stroller can accommodate the weight and age of your child. This is particularly important if you are looking to buy prams online as it may not always be apparent as to the suitability for your child.

Many prams are not suitable for babies until they are around 6 months of age, so if purchasing a pram for a newborn, pay particular attention to this. Likewise, if you are purchasing a pram for an older child, check the maximum weight limit of the pram.

best pram

It is also recommended that you give your child plenty of room to grow. You don’t want to purchase a stroller that suits your child today only to discover you need to upgrade in a year.

Ease of Use & Storability

The best pram on the market is one that is not only easy to use but easy to store as well.

The best stroller Australia has is something that is not only a breeze to move around, but also something that is easy to fold and unfold as well as switch seat position. Prams that don’t easily unfold or seats that don’t simply click into place become a real pain real quick! Particularly when you’re dealing with cranky and tired children at the same time.

It is also vital that before purchasing a pram that you consider where you are going to store it at home when it’s not in use, as well as your boot space. There is a huge difference between the bulkiness of prams and you don’t want to end up with a pram that is impractical to store. Believe me; you will likely end up buying another one!

Wheels

Prams generally come with either 3 or 4 wheels; a double stroller can come with more. So what’s the difference?

3 wheel prams tend to be better for all types of terrains, which is why jogger prams have 3 wheels. They have larger wheels and are much more smoother to push. However, a 3 wheel pram is likely to be longer, making them harder to get around in small spaces and bulkier to fold and store in the boot of your car.

The most common type of prams have 4 wheels. These wheels are usually smaller than 3 wheel prams and usually harder to push. The upside of 4 wheeled prams is they are usually more sturdy, and compact, making them easy to maneuver and store.

Overall Design

best pram

You are likely going to be spending quite a bit of time with this pram, so it is worthwhile that above everything else you purchase a pram that you are comfortable with, like the look of and is perfect for both you and your child.

Safety

As with all baby products, safety is essential! In Australia, the mandatory safety standard for prams is covered by the Trade Practice Act 1974 as well as guidelines under the Australian Standard – AS/NZS 2088:2000. All companies making and/or selling prams in Australia must comply with these standards.

These Australian guidelines and standards cover things such as strollers being required to have parking devices with at least one brake as well as a tether strap to prevent roll away incidents; harnesses to ensure children don’t fall from strollers; adequate head barriers and foot enclosures to prevent entrapment as well as no hazardous gaps to avoid finger entrapment.

A good solid frame will provide the safest pram as this tends to dictate the sturdiness and durability of the pram overall, which is important for your child’s safety.

If you are buying any cheap prams online, double check they comply with Australian standards.

Other Features Of The Top Prams

When you compare prams and read stroller reviews, consider some of the below features:

Basket/Tray/Cup Holder – The best prams Australia 2023 has will likely come with a storage basket, which is great for storing all the odds and ends children require, and tray or cup holders so children can eat whilst out and about.

Sun / Rain Hood – If you intend to use your pram in the outdoors, consider the weather. If you live in a sunny climate then look at the top prams 2023 has which come with a large canopy, large enough to provide adequate shade for your child. Likewise, a rain hood is great to protect your child from getting wet.

Seat Recline – Not all seat recline is created equal!  In fact, some prams may not recline at all. For younger children, the best stroller in Australia is one that will recline flat so children can sleep comfortably, but at the very least a few recline positions are beneficial.

Insect Cover – If you are spending a lot of time in the Australian outdoors, you may want to consider investing in an insect cover. This is particularly important if mosquitoes are bad in your area as it will protect your little ones from being bitten.

Recaro Performance Denali Review

Rating: 4.0

Specifications:

  • Type: Single
  • Age/Weight Range: From birth to 22.5 kg
  • Wheels: 4
  • Weight: 9.6 kg

The Recaro Performance Denali is perfect for parents that are after a durable but affordable pram and is suitable for newborns and babies up to a decent 22.5kg.

Straight out of the box, the pram feels solid, although slightly on the heavier side, which has both its advantages and disadvantages. The pram is clearly durable and the material feels to be of superior quality. Setup is easy, requiring only two wheels to be snapped into place.

For parents, there is an adjustable handlebar which is great for both tall and short parents. The pram includes a great canopy and easily reclinable seat, which still leaves plenty of space to access the under basket when the seat is reclined. It also nicely fits a nappy bag.

The pram comes with a hard wearing tray which can be easily removed, a 5-point harness, and a brake on the right wheel to lock the wheels (which could be a bit smoother to operate). Some parents also found collapsing the pram required a bit of muscle power, but it does collapse into a nice compact package.

For an affordable and durable pram, this is a great option.

What I like:

  • Drizzle resistant, large canopy
  • Large space for carrying goods in the under basket
  • High quality design

What I dislike:

  • The pram is on the heavier side
  • Requires a bit of muscle power to fold

Maclaren Twin Techno Stroller Review

Rating: 4.0

Specifications:

  • Type: Double
  • Age/Weight Range: From birth to 15 kg
  • Wheels: 8
  • Weight: 14.3 kg

Quality but relatively lightweight double prams can be difficult to find, but the Maclaren Twin Techno is a terrific option and perfect for parents after the best double pram Australia 2023 has.

At just a bit over 14kg, this double pram has several noteworthy features. Each seat has an individual canopy with excellent coverage, and the pram also includes a rain cover.

The seats can be reclined independently of one another and are controlled by a lever on the side. Note that this is an almost full recline and is suitable for newborns, with an in-built safety system. The seats include generous padding, hugging your baby comfortably, and the 5-point harness feels to be of good quality. The footrests can be expanded too.

The individual handles can be adjusted to your height and collapsing the pram is relatively simple once you get the hang of it – each side simply needs to be unlocked by foot and then collapsed. The pram then folds relatively compactly for a double pram.

The pram itself feels stable and durable, but with a capacity of just 15 kg each seat, it may not be the longest lasting pram and is most suitable for twins who will grow with each other.

What I like:

  • Suitable for newborn twins
  • One of the more compact double prams
  • Raincover included

What I dislike:

  • Seats are more on the narrow side
  • The basket can be hard to access
